Episode Transcript
[00:00:00] Speaker A: Like, I know what I want to say, like, and that's. Well, that's always been there and it all does kind of come back to even why I started doing the home movie show though. Because I'm like, okay, what I want to say does really connect with one's inner child. And like during this portion of my life, I was just like, okay, how do I connect with that on a day to day level? More so rather than like, okay, making a film and being in this industry. So it's a lot of promises, a lot of things that you. Yeah, you gotta throw out there and like you can submit a script or develop something for a really long time, but the day to day stuff just is like, whoa, when do I get to. Or you know, you feel. Or at least I felt like I'm missing the theater of it all. It's like, oh, live in a room and like putting together a show.
[00:00:51] Speaker B: The reason why you got into all of this.
[00:00:53] Speaker A: Exactly.
I very much connection of like people in the community too. I just was like, really?
[00:00:59] Speaker B: Like what?
[00:01:00] Speaker A: You know.
[00:01:02] Speaker C: I'm Luke Steinfeld.
[00:01:03] Speaker B: And I'm Wyatt Sarkissian.
[00:01:05] Speaker C: We made the 5050 podcast to support you on your filmmaking journey.
[00:01:08] Speaker B: 50% business, 50% creative.
[00:01:11] Speaker C: Every Tuesday, a new how to.
[00:01:14] Speaker B: This week we talk with recurring 5050 favorite Wiley Anderson, who brings the energy despite becoming very ill while directing a show in Edinburgh.
This episode is dedicated to all of our inner childs.
Inner children.
To all of our inner children.
Okay. Topics covered include Wily's monumental Saturn return, teaching Jedi Academy without having seen a single Star wars movie, Dramamine, and so much more. Enjoy.
[00:01:51] Speaker A: Well, hey, guys.
[00:01:52] Speaker B: Hey.
[00:01:52] Speaker A: What's up?
[00:01:54] Speaker C: Hey.
[00:01:54] Speaker B: How are you feeling?
[00:01:55] Speaker C: Yeah, how are you feeling?
[00:01:56] Speaker A: I'm feeling good. I'm feeling good. Happy to be back here.
[00:02:00] Speaker C: Yeah. You were at Edinburgh.
[00:02:02] Speaker A: Yes.
[00:02:03] Speaker C: Which we don't need to talk about too much because Britt Burke.
[00:02:06] Speaker A: Yes.
[00:02:07] Speaker B: Who directed Ruby Karps.
[00:02:09] Speaker A: Okay. She was here and she talked about.
[00:02:11] Speaker B: She gave us the Edinburgh 101.
[00:02:14] Speaker A: Yeah. Kooky Malook.
[00:02:16] Speaker B: Which is great.
[00:02:18] Speaker C: It is crazy.
[00:02:19] Speaker A: It's crazy.
[00:02:19] Speaker B: For understanding what your experience at Edinburgh was like. You were there with Grace Guy.
[00:02:26] Speaker A: I was there with Grace Guy. It was awesome. I directed her show Deckhand and it was really great.
[00:02:32] Speaker B: So fun.
[00:02:32] Speaker A: It was great. Yes.
[00:02:33] Speaker C: Have you been directing? Because she was doing a few of those. Right. Like in LA and stuff around town. Yes.
[00:02:38] Speaker B: You've been there from the start?
[00:02:39] Speaker A: Yes, I helped her develop it from the beginning.
[00:02:43] Speaker B: Totally.
[00:02:43] Speaker A: Yes.
[00:02:44] Speaker B: And you remained involved throughout the whole thing?
[00:02:46] Speaker A: I did. I Love her.
[00:02:48] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:02:48] Speaker A: She's one of my best friends. So I'm like, yeah, let's go. Like, I'll go to Edinburgh with you and sort of be there and do the whole gag.
[00:02:56] Speaker B: Totally.
[00:02:56] Speaker A: It was crazy, but it was fun.
I love.
[00:03:00] Speaker C: I hate to direct because Brit was saying you love to direct. Brit, but also loves to direct.
But she was like, there's no world. Well, she probably would have, but she was like, I can't stay a whole month and like, perform every night, you know, or direct every night.
[00:03:14] Speaker B: Yeah. Do you think you could do that?
[00:03:16] Speaker A: No.
[00:03:16] Speaker B: Did you do that?
[00:03:17] Speaker A: No, I did it. I was there for two weeks.
[00:03:19] Speaker C: Right.
[00:03:19] Speaker B: And Grace had a little. Didn't she? Was she every night or what Was her.
[00:03:23] Speaker A: Yes, she was on every night.
And yeah, I just. I, like, I ran the booth for her and it was me, her, and then Christopher Castorino.
[00:03:35] Speaker C: Nice.
[00:03:36] Speaker A: It was two person play.
[00:03:37] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:03:37] Speaker A: So I was just there. I also just wanted to experience it like I'd never been. And I was like, okay, I'll run the booth and be here. But like, yeah, totally. It was fun, but it was.
[00:03:47] Speaker B: We got a good framework of, like, the environment and the, like, the creative pulse of the festival. Did you pick up on that?
[00:03:54] Speaker A: Yeah, I did.
[00:03:56] Speaker B: Of course. You got very sick.
[00:03:58] Speaker A: Of course I got sick.
[00:03:59] Speaker B: But did you. Besides the sickness, did you.
Were you just like, this is like, I'm feeling so creatively inspired from this.
[00:04:08] Speaker A: It was awesome to see, like, all of the shows. It was. There was a lot of shows that were really. It was very cacophony of just so many people, so many shows. I saw a lot of great shows and that was great. And being in the environment was really cool. But yeah, just sort of ultimately got sick, of course, because is it really
[00:04:28] Speaker C: thin out at the end? Like, a lot of people don't make
[00:04:30] Speaker B: it because of the sickness.
[00:04:32] Speaker C: The sickness.
[00:04:32] Speaker A: But then just like Grayson Cass, we call him. They were. They got healthy. They were healthy. They were good.
[00:04:39] Speaker C: Yeah. Well, they're performing your body kind of.
[00:04:42] Speaker A: But it was totally fine. I just have sort of the weakest immune system of all time.
[00:04:47] Speaker C: You got hit?
[00:04:48] Speaker A: I got hit, but thank God I wasn't performing. So I just was sort of like.
[00:04:51] Speaker C: You're able to hit the booth?
[00:04:53] Speaker B: Yes.
[00:04:53] Speaker C: Yeah.
[00:04:54] Speaker B: My God. And you were sick and in the booth?
[00:04:56] Speaker A: Of course.
[00:04:57] Speaker C: Of course.
Of course. Yeah.
[00:04:59] Speaker B: Kind of a quarantine situation.
[00:05:01] Speaker A: Yeah, I was masked up for.
[00:05:03] Speaker C: How are you on, like that long of a flight?
[00:05:06] Speaker A: Not well.
Of course not.
[00:05:09] Speaker C: Are you the whole time just like, oh, my God.
[00:05:11] Speaker A: Well, I have to take Dramamine and you're still not.
[00:05:15] Speaker B: We were talking about the roller coasters and sickness and everything.
[00:05:18] Speaker A: I can't do roller coasters. I took a sickness.
[00:05:20] Speaker B: I'm also afraid this week. I got a flat tire on the way to work, so I ended up Ubering to work, and I was like, I cannot pay for another Uber to go home. So my co worker drove me home, and I took a Dramamine before she drove me home, because I knew I was gonna get car sick in the car.
And I was like. I was like, I'm gonna have to be making conversation the whole time. Like, I'm just like. I need to be like, I can't be sick during this car ride.
[00:05:44] Speaker A: Can't look down at your phone for
[00:05:45] Speaker C: a split on the plane too?
[00:05:48] Speaker A: No, just in cars.
[00:05:49] Speaker B: Yeah, cars bad.
[00:05:51] Speaker A: No, on flight. Well, of course. I'm sort of going, tube in the sky. Tube in the sky. Tube in the sky.
[00:05:57] Speaker B: For sure.
[00:05:57] Speaker C: Yeah. What's going on? How does this feel? I'm afraid.
[00:06:00] Speaker B: Tube in the sky. Am I being in a different place than I came from?
12 hours. I'm only able to really think about it.
[00:06:05] Speaker A: It's horrifying.
[00:06:06] Speaker B: Crazy.
[00:06:06] Speaker C: Yeah.
[00:06:07] Speaker A: Anyway.
[00:06:07] Speaker C: What is? What? Like, just the fact that it's a tube in the sky.
[00:06:11] Speaker A: I. I'm just like. This is. It's unnatural.
[00:06:13] Speaker C: Yeah.
[00:06:15] Speaker B: By the way, Luke's never been on a plane, so he's really gonna have it. Yeah, he's gonna.
[00:06:18] Speaker A: No, you haven't explained. That's a lie. Come on.
[00:06:22] Speaker C: Yeah. I've been on a plane.
[00:06:23] Speaker A: Okay. Okay.
[00:06:24] Speaker C: It was to. I went to Arizona a couple weeks ago.
[00:06:26] Speaker A: Okay.
[00:06:26] Speaker B: It was your. That was your first.
[00:06:28] Speaker C: Yeah.
[00:06:29] Speaker B: Crazy, dude.
[00:06:30] Speaker A: Well, I take Dramamine.
[00:06:32] Speaker C: Cool.
[00:06:32] Speaker A: I get it.
[00:06:33] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:06:33] Speaker A: And.
[00:06:34] Speaker B: But. And just to knock you out or. Yeah.
[00:06:36] Speaker A: Get me to sleep.
[00:06:37] Speaker B: Dramamine sleep is kind of a crazy sleep.
[00:06:40] Speaker A: It's crazy.
[00:06:40] Speaker C: Do you have any crazy dreams up there?
[00:06:42] Speaker A: I'm. I don't even. I think. I think I black out.
I don't really know. I'm just like. I don't really know what's happening.
[00:06:50] Speaker C: And you don't put your seat back.
[00:06:53] Speaker A: Same. One more time. Oh, seat.
[00:06:55] Speaker C: You don't put your seat back.
[00:06:57] Speaker A: I. Well, yes, but then I'll be here, and then I'll be like this.
[00:07:00] Speaker B: The crouch is.
[00:07:01] Speaker A: It's horrible.
[00:07:03] Speaker C: That is.
[00:07:03] Speaker B: I know. My mom. My mom is one of those people.
[00:07:05] Speaker C: Dude, I was sitting next to someone the other day, and they're. They just did no table down. They just put their head against the seat in front of me.
[00:07:14] Speaker B: Yeah, they sold.
[00:07:16] Speaker C: This is a 12 hour flight. Like, what are you doing?
[00:07:18] Speaker A: It was like really long to Scotland. I'm sort of going here. I'm going here. And then on the way back, I changed my seat. So I'm like, Wiley. Yes. You like being on the aisle for sort of like your feet kind of go like this. I'm like, I gotta lean against the window.
[00:07:35] Speaker C: Just get me something to lean on.
[00:07:38] Speaker B: Are you aisle preference or window preference?
[00:07:41] Speaker C: I used to be always window and now I'm only aisle.
[00:07:45] Speaker B: I feel the same exact way.
[00:07:46] Speaker A: It's crazy to grow up.
Yes.
[00:07:48] Speaker C: Yeah. Because of my leg, though. You need leg space. I need leg room. Like, and also though you put your leg out and the cart comes out and they hit you in the knee.
[00:07:58] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:07:58] Speaker C: Why is every single flight we are fully. We are over overbooked. Like, you need to book or you need to like, get all your baggage, whatever it is, like, sent away. What are you talking about? Like, why don't you just stop overbooking flights? Like, yeah, you know.
[00:08:16] Speaker A: Hey, guys, Delta.
[00:08:18] Speaker B: JetBlue is going to be Delta.
[00:08:20] Speaker C: Yeah, yeah, Delta.
[00:08:21] Speaker A: I took Delta.
[00:08:22] Speaker B: Yeah, yeah.
[00:08:23] Speaker C: Delta is great.
[00:08:24] Speaker A: Anyway, they're all great.
[00:08:24] Speaker B: Delta.
[00:08:25] Speaker C: But that's awesome. So as long as you got there and you were there for a couple weeks.
[00:08:29] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:08:30] Speaker C: Had a great time. Yeah. You're obviously, you've been very theater and film, you know, always. Yeah. Back and forth.
And it seems, at least in my head, I thought was like, you're very much seem to be focusing on or honing in on the film side of things. And so this is like kind of a fun.
[00:08:49] Speaker A: Oh, this was so nice.
[00:08:51] Speaker C: Yeah. Was it refreshing? Was it like a little reset?
[00:08:54] Speaker A: Yes. I mean, other than sort of the ill of it all, it was really refreshing.
I was.
It was really nice to be around like, theater stuff again because I have been so. Since graduating, not been doing that short
[00:09:12] Speaker B: film after short film.
[00:09:13] Speaker A: Yes.
[00:09:13] Speaker C: And working on stuff.
[00:09:17] Speaker A: Enough of that.
No, no, no, no. Keep going.
[00:09:21] Speaker B: Going.
[00:09:21] Speaker A: No, stop.
[00:09:22] Speaker C: No.
[00:09:22] Speaker B: Yeah, Festival. Lots of winning.
[00:09:24] Speaker A: No winning.
All right, winning.
[00:09:28] Speaker C: Okay, okay.
[00:09:29] Speaker A: Remember that? That was so crazy.
Anyway, anyway.
Okay. I don't know about that.
Or don't.
[00:09:38] Speaker C: Yeah, we can't.
[00:09:39] Speaker B: Yeah, we actually don't cut on. On camera.
[00:09:41] Speaker A: Oh, sick.
[00:09:42] Speaker C: Also, I.
[00:09:43] Speaker B: You might be getting a little bit in my.
[00:09:45] Speaker A: Oh, please. I'm so sorry. I'm like absolutely bent over.
[00:09:47] Speaker B: You're kind of like the plane situation.
[00:09:50] Speaker A: Well, I was acting it out, so theater. God, it was so great to do as a sort of Departure.
[00:09:56] Speaker B: Does part of you want to be up there? Like, you're such a performer.
[00:10:00] Speaker A: I'm an actor also, so. Yes.
[00:10:02] Speaker B: We were talking. We were bonding outside about hosting.
[00:10:05] Speaker C: Yeah. What were you guys okay. About hosting.
[00:10:07] Speaker A: Hosting.
[00:10:07] Speaker B: We Talked for like 30 minutes outside. It was a really good pre podcast.
[00:10:11] Speaker C: Great.
[00:10:11] Speaker A: That's awesome.
[00:10:12] Speaker C: I love that.
[00:10:12] Speaker A: Thanks.
[00:10:13] Speaker B: But we were. We were talking about the love of. Of hosting, and I feel like hosting is like a combination of performance and connection and empathy and giving the spotlight to other people. Like, it's such a combination of things that we both love. And you've been doing it so much with Home Movie show, which we can get into as well, because.
[00:10:30] Speaker A: Oh, yes.
[00:10:31] Speaker B: It's kind of taking Silver Lake by storm, you could say.
[00:10:34] Speaker A: Well, wow. Hey, Wyatt, thanks so much for saying that.
[00:10:38] Speaker B: Yeah, yeah, of course.
[00:10:39] Speaker A: What can I say?
No, it's really been going great. You guys came to the first one, which is really awesome. But. Yes.
[00:10:46] Speaker B: With Scott Callahan.
[00:10:47] Speaker C: Scott Callahan, Yes.
[00:10:49] Speaker B: She doesn't know.
[00:10:50] Speaker C: Scott's the man. We'll have Scott on here someday.
[00:10:53] Speaker A: Awesome.
[00:10:53] Speaker C: He's currently at usc. He just started writing program.
[00:10:57] Speaker A: Oh, hell. Hey, heard that's a good program.
[00:11:00] Speaker C: It's pretty good.
[00:11:01] Speaker A: Okay, that's sick.
[00:11:03] Speaker B: Some people say nyu, Superior, all that.
[00:11:06] Speaker A: Whatever. Nyu.
Hey, no, every college is a great college. Okay, so who do you think watches this?
[00:11:14] Speaker C: What are you afraid of?
[00:11:15] Speaker A: I don't know.
Digital footprint.
[00:11:17] Speaker C: You're right.
[00:11:18] Speaker A: You know what I mean?
[00:11:18] Speaker C: It's true. Are you like Wy Anderson?
[00:11:20] Speaker A: Of course.
[00:11:20] Speaker C: What does she say?
[00:11:21] Speaker A: I'm petrified.
[00:11:23] Speaker B: Anyway, yeah, this is live, by the way. Did you know that? Yes.
[00:11:27] Speaker C: Yeah.
[00:11:27] Speaker B: Do we have the comments up?
[00:11:29] Speaker C: Yeah, yeah.
[00:11:30] Speaker A: Guys, you can't. That's a horror movie for me. Anyway, so. Yeah, the Home Movie Show.
[00:11:37] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:11:38] Speaker C: Yeah.
[00:11:38] Speaker A: I love hosting. I do love.
[00:11:40] Speaker B: Let's talk about the concept of it because it's such a. A fun premise and there's like. And as we were talking about, it's also like. I'm sure it's changed in ways and you've been able to refine stuff. So let's get into the premise.
[00:11:54] Speaker A: Yeah. Okay. So this show I've started hosting this year.
So fun and, like, talking about lifting other people up also while doing, like, the hosting. You guys are. Hey, you're doing this. This project, and basically it's a show where we do it in like an old VHS shop in Echo Park.
[00:12:18] Speaker C: Whammy.
[00:12:19] Speaker A: Whammy. You know, it. It's fun. They have a new location that we've been doing the new shows at. Which is great.
Yes, it's good fun. Also in Echo Parks, which is also nearby. Yes. Bigger.
No, different. Colorado.
[00:12:33] Speaker C: Yeah.
[00:12:33] Speaker B: Oh, yeah.
[00:12:34] Speaker A: Fun.
So, yes, people submit their childhood films that they made when they were.
[00:12:42] Speaker C: We gotta submit.
[00:12:43] Speaker A: Yeah, no, you guys actually have to submit.
It's two days before the. Your horror. 50 50.
[00:12:49] Speaker B: October 16th home movies. 18th February. That's the next one is the festival.
[00:12:53] Speaker A: So fun people submit their home movies that they made when they were kids. Not like America's Funniest Home Videos. Like, give me your narrative. Like your earnest narrative stuff or your 3 to 5 minute photo booth music video. Like that is the vibe of. You submit those. And then I like, curate. I'll curate the film festival. It's like we'll choose like five or six.
[00:13:17] Speaker B: And you as a host, take it very seriously.
[00:13:19] Speaker A: Oh, of course.
[00:13:20] Speaker C: Got the suit on.
[00:13:21] Speaker A: Got the suit on. It's like. Yes, very serious. But like, you know, I'm going mise en scene. Tell me about sort of what was your role in this project?
So, so fun. And then we do a Q and A. Like a very short Q and A after each film goes up. And then I talk to them about, what are you doing now? Also like a.
[00:13:41] Speaker B: Sometimes they're like, not like, I remember there was a teacher, like, just someone who's not. It's so fun to like.
[00:13:48] Speaker A: Oh, yeah.
So fun. And I love that. And then the whole thing, the whole show, every time is a fundraiser for somebody's like, on the ground independent project.
[00:13:58] Speaker B: The first one was a fundraiser for Deckhand to get you guys to Edinburgh and do your.
[00:14:02] Speaker A: Yeah, that was the only one I was also a part of. Then we also had Santi Maclean, who you guys should have on. He's an amazing artist and he was doing a film, like a short film series.
[00:14:15] Speaker C: He won the one that we went to. Right?
[00:14:17] Speaker A: Oh, yes, yeah. Oh, yeah, There's. It's also.
[00:14:20] Speaker C: Yeah.
[00:14:20] Speaker A: Yes, one.
No, yeah, yeah.
I'll expose this. It is there. There's an award ceremony at the very end of each show, of course. And the trophies.
The trophies are of course, sort of bought from the sort of famous CVS stores. You know them? Oh, yes, yes, cvs. We of course tag on the bottom still. Like, it's sort of all a part of that.
[00:14:48] Speaker B: And then CVS is very.
[00:14:49] Speaker A: That's very cvs. Those little trophies. Yeah, so those are given out a
[00:14:54] Speaker B: bunch of award shows.
[00:14:55] Speaker C: Cvs.
[00:14:55] Speaker A: Cvs. Yes.
So there's that. And then my sister, who is.
She's gonna be 16 soon, right.
[00:15:04] Speaker B: She's in high school.
[00:15:05] Speaker A: Yes. She's 15.
She is sort of the grand prize juror.
[00:15:11] Speaker B: And she had a couple of her friends too, there.
[00:15:13] Speaker A: Yes. You guys came when she was there.
[00:15:16] Speaker B: She brought, like, her whole squad.
[00:15:17] Speaker A: Oh, yeah. And that was only for the first show. She has not been back since. But she'll send in a video.
[00:15:24] Speaker C: I haven't.
[00:15:25] Speaker A: Every time I make her send a video.
[00:15:27] Speaker C: That's even funnier, by the way.
[00:15:28] Speaker A: Oh, she's like. And she's always somewhere.
[00:15:30] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:15:30] Speaker A: Like the last one, she was like, getting her hair done. We're just sort of like. She's like, hi. Like, sorry, I couldn't be there.
[00:15:36] Speaker B: But like, she really leans into, like the.
[00:15:38] Speaker A: Oh, yeah, yeah.
[00:15:39] Speaker B: She's the celebrity of it all.
[00:15:41] Speaker A: Oh, because she's. She's the celebrity of the.
Of the show.
[00:15:45] Speaker B: Yes. But I want to have her back because she's like a kid, you know.
[00:15:49] Speaker C: Scheduling is tough with her.
[00:15:50] Speaker A: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Scheduling is really Exactly.
Jet setting.
[00:15:56] Speaker B: What I like about the home movie show is that it is. It's catching these. Whether filmmakers or not even, you know, doing that anymore. Like, it's catching people at a point when they were just making movies for the love of making movies.
[00:16:09] Speaker A: Yes.
[00:16:09] Speaker B: There's no pressure on making it a career or anything. It's just like the most earnest. And, you know, a lot of them are not, like, what we think of as amazing, but some of them are like. Well, I remember you turned to me and you were like, this is because I think there's something.
[00:16:23] Speaker C: Oh, you're like, one of like, this needs to be submitted to horror festivals. This is fantastic.
[00:16:27] Speaker B: But there's something so earnest and beautiful about, like, a kid's movie that they made because it's just their imagination and using literally like their garage or whatever open space they have. They're using their little sister to play the evil alien coming in.
[00:16:42] Speaker C: Exactly.
[00:16:43] Speaker B: It's, like, so cute.
[00:16:44] Speaker A: It's my. I love it. I really love seeing that. And then also, like, the community that comes out. I think it just like, I wanted to start doing it because it was like a reminder of. Okay. Why I was. Hey, we were talking about this outside. I turned 28.
[00:17:01] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:17:02] Speaker A: And I'm like, happy birthday. Hey, thank you. It's Saturn Return vibes for me. And I was really thinking, you're like, what you know about Saturn Return? Okay. It's kind of astrology vibes.
[00:17:14] Speaker C: Yeah, yeah. No, that's.
[00:17:15] Speaker B: You began to.
[00:17:16] Speaker C: I don't know if it's like, oh, yeah.
[00:17:17] Speaker B: Or something.
[00:17:17] Speaker A: No, no.
[00:17:18] Speaker B: You began to explain it to me, Just sort of.
[00:17:22] Speaker A: I've been told that it's when you're in your late 20s, there's like, a portion of time, maybe a year or just a portion of time where, like, everything turns on its head and you sort of quote, unquote, wake up. I'm going, whoa.
And so that's kind of happened to me this year where I'm like, oh, what am I really trying to say? Do with my life, everything. And, like, who. Who am I?
[00:17:48] Speaker C: Oh, man.
[00:17:49] Speaker A: So get ready. Get ready. If it hasn't happened, but it's late 20s, I've heard this happen to people, and I'm like, oh, this is totally.
[00:17:56] Speaker C: Do you feel, like, a deep sense of clarity with that? Are you in this moment of, like, I am so lost?
[00:18:05] Speaker A: No, I feel clear.
I feel like I'm on the other side of.
[00:18:10] Speaker C: So you're kind of, like, molding a little bit of, like, okay, like, let's do this and let's do that, instead of like, I like the. You know, because mid. Early mid-20s seems to just be an existential mess.
[00:18:19] Speaker B: Correct.
[00:18:20] Speaker C: What am I doing? And you have moments of like, yeah, this is great. I'm doing the thing, and just sort
[00:18:25] Speaker A: of like, what am I doing? And what is this? And obviously, I'm still feeling like that in life, of course. Never stops. Never stop.
[00:18:33] Speaker C: Because we know that. Because we're 20s.
[00:18:35] Speaker A: Yeah, we're 20s. I think that 25.
[00:18:37] Speaker B: It's like, I feel like I'm in this period right now of, like, deep, like, confusion about stuff. And like. Yeah, I feel like you have.
[00:18:46] Speaker C: It's been in that since day one. I just don't know where I am. Yeah.
[00:18:49] Speaker B: No, literally, I'm so disoriented right now. Very dizzy. I have to take Dramamine to get up now.
[00:18:55] Speaker A: Oh, my God.
[00:18:56] Speaker B: Completely spinning four wies on the couch.
[00:19:00] Speaker A: Can you clip that?
[00:19:01] Speaker B: Which one?
[00:19:02] Speaker A: We love Dramamine.
[00:19:03] Speaker B: Yeah, we love Dramamind sponsor. Oh, that would be sick if it was.
[00:19:07] Speaker A: I'll talk to you about sponsors. Yeah, Dramamine.
[00:19:09] Speaker B: Yeah, yeah, I'll talk to you about sponsors.
[00:19:11] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:19:11] Speaker B: Talk to you about that later. But I do think. My guess is that you have to go through that sort of horrid confusion.
[00:19:19] Speaker A: Yes.
[00:19:19] Speaker B: To get to this sort of clarity.
[00:19:22] Speaker C: Well, I. Right. My big question is, like, does that mean why it's different? Or does that just mean, you know, everyone in their 20s feels like this, and some folks decide to, like, really sit with it and give the time to, like, think about it, and other folks might just be Like, I feel that, but like, I'm gonna go do my job and like, not think about it, you know? I don't know.
[00:19:49] Speaker A: I have no idea.
[00:19:51] Speaker C: Yeah.
[00:19:52] Speaker A: I just want to know what has been happening to me, which is. I'm going.
[00:19:57] Speaker C: You're losing your mind.
[00:19:58] Speaker A: I was kind of losing my mind for a while, as you do.
[00:20:02] Speaker C: I think we, like, we're all done.
[00:20:04] Speaker A: I think you can like.
[00:20:05] Speaker B: But maybe what you're getting to is that like, you can ignore.
[00:20:09] Speaker C: Yes. I think that's what I'm trying to get at.
[00:20:11] Speaker B: Did you have that where you're like,
[00:20:13] Speaker C: there's a lot of distractions.
[00:20:14] Speaker B: I don't know who I am in the future and that freaks me out. But I can just have this job and not think about it right now. Did you feel that way or you were like, I can just like rely on this sense of stability through whatever
[00:20:28] Speaker A: I like have or had and still. But like, okay, these visions of like, what I want to do with my life. And I talked to you guys about this last year, like, okay, I have my creative process and I want to be a filmmaker and I want to be an actor and I want to
[00:20:42] Speaker B: vaguely know what you want to say through.
[00:20:45] Speaker A: I know what I want to do.
[00:20:46] Speaker C: Super specific.
I remember being like, what? Like, I mean, I kind of knew it was coming in and seeing your work, but you are an established voice as a filmmaker, totally in your 20s, which is a very unique.
[00:20:58] Speaker A: Thank you.
I know what I want to say.
Well, that's always been there and it all does kind of come back to even why I started doing the home movie show though. Because I'm like, okay, what I want to say does really connect with one's inner child. And during this portion of my life, I was just like, okay, how do I connect with that on a day to day level? More so rather than like, okay, making a film and being in this industry. So a lot of promises, a lot of things that you. Yeah, you gotta throw out there and like, you can submit a script or develop something for a really long time, but the day to day stuff just is like, whoa, when do I get to. Or you know, you feel. Or at least I felt like I'm missing the theater of it all. It was like, oh, live in a room and like putting together a show.
[00:21:51] Speaker B: The reason why you got into all of this.
[00:21:53] Speaker A: Exactly. Just connection of like people in the community too. I just was like, really?
Like what? You know, a lot of things happen in this industry behind closed doors and rooms and it's.
[00:22:06] Speaker B: It Becomes so sort of, like, for lack of a better term, like, political in a way.
[00:22:12] Speaker C: Also, just not fun. Not.
[00:22:14] Speaker A: Yeah, yeah.
[00:22:15] Speaker C: You know, like, in the very, like, layman's terms of, like, just not fun. It's like. It's such a fun thing. We're all trying.
[00:22:20] Speaker B: Right. For something so objectively hard. Hard.
[00:22:24] Speaker C: Yeah.
[00:22:24] Speaker B: It should at least be fun.
[00:22:25] Speaker C: It's literally impossible.
[00:22:27] Speaker B: Right?
[00:22:27] Speaker C: Like, every.
[00:22:28] Speaker B: Everyone says that.
[00:22:29] Speaker C: It's like every movie is, like, practically miracle. Even a short film.
[00:22:31] Speaker A: It's like, yes.
[00:22:32] Speaker C: And then the sun came out. Then it worked, and we got the shot, and it's like, of course it did. Because, like. Yeah, that's just what happens when you. When you push from a genuine place, you know?
[00:22:41] Speaker A: Yes. And, like, all of that is. It's so amazing when it all comes together. But, yeah, it takes a really long time. And you're like, that's great. And I love being patient, and, like, that is all a part of it.
But the. This show that I just started, this home movie thing really is just for fun. And I'm like.
And I think it's a great.
We've done. Yeah. Like, a few of them now. And, like, the people that come out to see it, the people whose films are in it, can, like, talk about what they're doing. Then we fundraise for somebody who's, like, just trying to.
We're doing our first feature that we're fundraising for, this night in October.
And, like, how we got connected with this girl is just, like, word of mouth. We're just like, okay, right now. You know, I want to grow it and, like, keep moving with this. But it is, like, a priority where I'm like, okay, this is about.
Come here. Come connect with your.
We're gonna watch these, like, films that we made when we were kids, and it's comedy show, and it's also, like, kind of a party afterwards. Like, it's a hang. We have, like, drinks and snacks and, like, it's all very personalized. And.
[00:23:52] Speaker B: Yes.
[00:23:52] Speaker A: Hang out afterwards.
[00:23:53] Speaker B: There's a big. Yeah, there's like a big social component.
[00:23:56] Speaker A: Yeah. Just, like, come and talk and, like, let's make this.
This a little more fun. Just a little more.
[00:24:04] Speaker C: As simple as that.
[00:24:05] Speaker A: Light. Yeah.
[00:24:06] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:24:06] Speaker A: That was my goal with it. Not totally. Yeah.
[00:24:08] Speaker B: And how has it played out?
[00:24:10] Speaker A: Like, how it's been really great. I have loved. Yeah. We did one with Grace Guy, and then Sansa McLean, and then we just had Stefan Linhares and then all filmmakers and playwrights, and then this girl Alison, who's Coming on.
She's like a clown in the world and like the Elysian.
[00:24:32] Speaker B: And is this who's fundraising for the feature?
[00:24:35] Speaker A: Yeah, exactly.
[00:24:35] Speaker B: Awesome.
[00:24:37] Speaker A: And she's making her first feature, and it's just like these people in the LA scene right now who are like.
Yeah, we're trying to.
[00:24:45] Speaker B: I like the idea of. Cause we've talked about fundraising in the past, and we've talked about unexpected ways to fundraise, but this is, like, a really fun. Like, to put on an event where, like. And the fun part, like, it cost. Like, it didn't cost anything to submit these movies to the festival or make these movies because they were made on flip cameras in 2006.
[00:25:07] Speaker A: And you don't have to be, like, a filmmaker specifically. Like, you can be. Of course.
But then also it's just people who are like, oh, yeah, I made this, like. Yeah, I keep saying photo booth music video because I'm like, those are sort of.
[00:25:21] Speaker C: I forget which one it was. At the first one.
[00:25:23] Speaker A: Yes, there was.
[00:25:24] Speaker B: Oh, my God.
[00:25:25] Speaker C: They did the flying.
[00:25:26] Speaker A: Yes.
[00:25:26] Speaker C: Like, that was Hayden Ross.
[00:25:29] Speaker B: It's the one with, like, the gun sound in it.
[00:25:31] Speaker C: That's mia. It was that. It was.
[00:25:33] Speaker A: Oh, yeah. Paper planes music video. Like, it's that era where we're kind of.
[00:25:38] Speaker C: That was so cool.
[00:25:39] Speaker A: It's fun. It's fun. Yeah, I. And yeah. Then we cut it. Sparks. That convo. And then people are kind of more connected to their. You know, because we're all. Now. We all grew up with this.
[00:25:50] Speaker B: Like, it puts us all in the
[00:25:51] Speaker A: same movie technology, like, you know.
[00:25:53] Speaker C: Yeah, the imovie stuff.
[00:25:55] Speaker B: Yes, totally.
[00:25:56] Speaker A: Yeah. Like, last time we. Just. One of them. I just showed, like, you know, one of those trailers, like the. That you would make, like, on imovie. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. And it was like a fake Batman trailer, you know, so funny. And they were just like.
[00:26:08] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:26:08] Speaker C: What would.
[00:26:09] Speaker B: Do you remember anything you did?
[00:26:11] Speaker C: I mean, I. I just always think about the giver. Yeah, we did.
[00:26:14] Speaker A: Tell me about this.
[00:26:14] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:26:15] Speaker C: Did we made a giver there? There were a few projects we did way back where. I mean, just in school. They would be like, you can either write a paper or you could, like, make a little short video.
[00:26:25] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:26:25] Speaker C: And we'd always be like, let's make a video.
[00:26:27] Speaker B: Yeah, of course we made, like, a giver video.
[00:26:29] Speaker C: Yeah.
[00:26:30] Speaker A: For the giver.
[00:26:30] Speaker B: Yeah. One of us. I think you played the giver maybe with the.
[00:26:33] Speaker C: With the beard, the cane and stuff.
[00:26:35] Speaker A: Yes. And were you. Is his name Jonas?
[00:26:39] Speaker B: I remember doing a shot. Do you remember Doing the shot on a skateboard out on the. I remember vividly, like, doing a shot where your mom was, like, filming or something, and it was on a skateboard on the sidewalk. And it was like. Like conveying travel or something. It was just, like, so DIY and fun.
[00:26:56] Speaker A: Oh, yeah. That is.
[00:26:58] Speaker C: Let's play.
[00:26:59] Speaker A: Submit it. Find it. Submit it.
[00:27:00] Speaker C: We have to.
[00:27:01] Speaker A: You got it. We'll do a Q and A up there.
[00:27:03] Speaker C: We really have to. I know it's somewhere, but what's kind of interesting, and I don't want to say, like, just maybe potentially the truth for you, but of just like, when you set out, even in, like, in very businessy things, but like, you set out to do something fun and, like, you're having fun and it's working.
People will see value in that business. Value. And at some point there's going to, I assume, be some business. I'm sure you're already thinking like that because you are. You have that 50, 50 split in your head of, like, you're a filmmaker and an artist to the core, but, like, you also are aware, you know, of the industry. And that's what happened to 5050 of, like, day one. I set out to make this thing that was exactly that. It was fun, but also make the
[00:27:48] Speaker B: side that you don't really want to do fun.
[00:27:50] Speaker C: Exactly.
[00:27:51] Speaker A: Totally.
[00:27:52] Speaker C: And of course, it had that business element literally in the name, but, like, it was fun and it kept being fun.
[00:27:59] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:28:00] Speaker C: And then it was like sponsors hitting us up, and all of a sudden we have to get venue. And, like, it's like, it becomes. It's a very natural evolution, but, like, it's just an interesting growth to be like, wait. But I just wanted to make something fun. And you hear that, like, I think of, like, Arthur and Andrew when they made that the short they made in our comedy festival called the Extraordinaries, and they were like, we had so much pressure on ourselves to be writing features and doing this, and we're like, screw it. Let's just make a short film for us.
[00:28:30] Speaker B: And they wrote it and fun. Yeah. Super short.
[00:28:33] Speaker C: Shot it in a day.
And it's their. It's their calling card.
[00:28:36] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:28:37] Speaker C: That's the thing. Usually.
[00:28:38] Speaker B: Yes.
[00:28:39] Speaker C: Yeah.
[00:28:39] Speaker A: Is how that will go.
[00:28:40] Speaker B: It's exactly their dynamic, their sense of humor.
[00:28:43] Speaker C: So this, after hearing a bit of context of just, like, where you're at, you know, life wise. I don't say career wise of like, the Saturn rising.
[00:28:53] Speaker A: Return.
[00:28:54] Speaker C: Return. Saturn return.
Saturn return.
[00:28:57] Speaker A: I can't believe that this is.
[00:28:59] Speaker B: It's the first mention of Saturn return.
[00:29:03] Speaker C: But, like, in this state of, like, clarity.
[00:29:05] Speaker A: Yeah, yeah.
[00:29:06] Speaker C: The home movie show, do you feel like that's like, your core of, like, let's latch on to this and be like, this is the voice. This is the stuff or the. The tone of, like, what I want to be doing, what I want to be making.
[00:29:18] Speaker A: Yes. Yeah.
[00:29:19] Speaker C: And what does that actually mean?
[00:29:21] Speaker A: Yeah, like, it's been reminding me of, like, of why I'm wanting to do this.
[00:29:28] Speaker C: Why do what? Be a filmmaker.
[00:29:31] Speaker A: Be a filmmaker. Be in entertainment. Because it's been. Just since I graduated in 2020, it's just been bleak, as we know. I think we talked about this last time, too. Can't stop thinking about it, of course. I guess.
[00:29:42] Speaker C: Saturn.
[00:29:44] Speaker A: Saturn, yeah. Goddamn Saturn.
But so that was really important for me in this time.
And it's also, like, aligns. I hate using the word aesthetically, but, like, I guess that's what I mean of, like, the films that I make, the stories I want to tell all are connected to. It's women, children, and digital anxieties is kind of like the little. I talked about this last time. Just. That's. That's the core and the feeling of the stories I'm making and want to make and be a part of.
All are in this and this.
It feels like an incubator kind of for me, this. The show of, like, oh, this is the home of the kind of stories I want to tell. This is the spirit of the. The content. Or, like.
[00:30:42] Speaker C: Spirit's a great word, though.
[00:30:43] Speaker A: Yeah. The spirit of it.
[00:30:44] Speaker C: It almost becomes like, a reminder for you of, like.
[00:30:46] Speaker A: Yeah, yeah, you're.
[00:30:47] Speaker C: You're working on your projects, you're doing this, and you can return to.
[00:30:50] Speaker A: Yeah, this. The spirit of, like, what. Oh, why am I, you know, you get just in the weeds of like, okay, I'm even shot listing, or I'm producing this thing. And it's like, a lot of logistics, and I just get.
I've always been like, I'll just, you know, remember.
Oh, I. Why am I doing this? Oh, because I would make movies in the backyard with my video camera when dad was asleep.
[00:31:17] Speaker C: Yeah.
[00:31:17] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:31:17] Speaker A: Like, that's why. And so I'm just like, okay, that's sort of come back to that. And then I always feel, okay. Yeah, it's good.
[00:31:24] Speaker C: Yeah.
[00:31:25] Speaker B: We'll be right back.
[00:31:31] Speaker C: I want to play, like, a scary song from, like, a horror movie before this, but all the copyright stuff, so I can't but imagine there's, like, a scary song playing right now. And it's like, oh, the 5050 horror festival is coming up. You need to submit your short film soon, by August 7th. August 7th is the deadline. You have two months to submit your short film. You have two months.
And then after that, there's another deadline.
Read it here first, sub it down.
Submit now if you dare.
No, but for real, we have our horror festival coming up in October.
October 18th is the actual day. Get your short in by August 7th if you want to be a part of it. We look forward to viewing your submission on Film Freeway. 5050 horror. Those are the numbers. 5, 0, slash, 50 horror.
I don't know. It must be something in the air, man.
[00:32:31] Speaker B: I know, because we've.
[00:32:32] Speaker C: We've had this converse, like, our.
[00:32:34] Speaker B: This whole summer.
[00:32:35] Speaker C: Yeah, totally. The whole summer.
[00:32:37] Speaker B: A lot of just very existential. Very existential. Deep conversations about, like, what. Like, what.
What is. What are. What is our purpose individually.
[00:32:46] Speaker C: Yeah.
[00:32:46] Speaker B: And what. Like, how can we hearken back to, like, what actually got us into this?
[00:32:50] Speaker C: But it makes, I guess, the. The through line, aside from just, like, maybe there's something. But, like, the people we're talking to, like, our age and stuff, and, like, you know, people turn in mid, early 20s and mid 20s and late 20s, whatever it is, or early 30s.
But it's just. It's interesting. And it's also comforting to know that we're all going through it and, like, our. The folks we have on, like, yourself are, like. You guys are incredibly established and, like, doing amazing stuff.
[00:33:17] Speaker A: Yeah, yeah. Yeah, you are.
[00:33:19] Speaker C: And. Oh, thank you.
[00:33:20] Speaker A: Yeah, you guys are.
[00:33:21] Speaker B: We're talking about you, though.
[00:33:22] Speaker C: Yeah, we're talking about you.
[00:33:23] Speaker A: Well, I'm saying it to y'.
[00:33:25] Speaker C: All. Thank you. Thank you, thank you.
But it's just. It's a. It's a very interesting. And it is kind of Saturday and a little bit of just like, damn, like, what's up with us? Like, why can't we just, like, accept it and, like, play, you know? But there is just such a.
You got to work.
[00:33:43] Speaker B: It's very, very, like, emotionally complicated, you know?
[00:33:46] Speaker A: Yes, right. Yes, it is. But, yeah, I don't. I.
I've been really loving this.
Making this show really was like, oh, I've been feeling a lot better about things because I feel like, oh, I'm just getting connected to.
And you're right. Like, it is a business thing that I'm excited about also. I'm like, okay, great. But I'm like, okay, the other stuff is starting to feel a little more okay. I'm aligned with what I want to do. And it's also okay if certain things don't work out and certain things do. There's wins and there's losses. I think, like, I'm at a point where I've had losses in entertainment, you know, in the industry, where you're like, okay, this didn't work out, but then this did. And then I'm like, okay, everything happens for a reason. I don't know. I'm just really getting more in the.
Keep working hard, keep pushing, doing your thing, but, like, it's okay if not.
[00:34:53] Speaker C: Sounds like trust almost. You know, it's like you're just. You're finally, like. It's not really acceptance or like relinquishing control. It's just more of like, trusting that, like. Cause the only thing you can control is the work, is the grind.
[00:35:05] Speaker A: Yes.
[00:35:05] Speaker C: You know, and like, it seems like you're trusting that and accepting that truth and just being like, I'm doing what I want to be doing.
I can feel that.
And it'll happen, you know, but it doesn't really matter because you're doing it.
[00:35:22] Speaker A: Yeah, it's like a. It's very.
Yeah, I.
I'm different phase. I'm telling you. Saturn return, you guys, I just.
[00:35:33] Speaker C: How to Saturn return?
[00:35:34] Speaker A: How to Saturn return?
[00:35:35] Speaker B: How to return your Saturn.
[00:35:36] Speaker C: Oh, that's interesting.
[00:35:37] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:35:38] Speaker A: Oh, boy.
[00:35:38] Speaker B: Clipping it a little bit.
[00:35:40] Speaker A: Oh, man, I can't believe.
[00:35:43] Speaker B: So what are you working on outside of home movie show? Are you. Are you.
Is that an okay question?
[00:35:49] Speaker A: Absolutely.
[00:35:50] Speaker B: What are you excited about? I mean, I want to. You speak very well about your work and other people's work. I'm curious, like, what.
[00:35:57] Speaker A: Thank you.
[00:35:58] Speaker B: What are you excited about these days?
[00:36:00] Speaker A: Thank you.
I'm really excited about. I'm producing this one woman show right now. We're going to do it at The Dynasty Typewriter October 2nd.
Starring Becca Bastos, is directed by Rachel Samples. And I'm producing it. And that has been really great and fun. I've like, developed that with her too.
I've been just like helping some people with their stuff, like Deckhand, and it's been really fulfilling. And then I've just been working on my feature forever and so I'm just still doing that.
[00:36:34] Speaker C: Can we dig into that?
[00:36:37] Speaker A: Yes.
[00:36:38] Speaker B: And we'll link the Dynasty show in the.
[00:36:40] Speaker A: Oh, yeah.
[00:36:41] Speaker C: And also the most recent draft of the screenplay.
[00:36:43] Speaker B: Yeah, yeah. We'll attach a PDF.
[00:36:45] Speaker C: Yeah, yeah.
[00:36:46] Speaker B: I'll see if I can. Yeah.
[00:36:47] Speaker C: Cool.
[00:36:47] Speaker B: Drive.
[00:36:48] Speaker A: But that's been great.
[00:36:49] Speaker B: Would we be able to just link your Drive link.
[00:36:51] Speaker C: Your whole Google Drive.
[00:36:52] Speaker A: Yeah, you can link to my drive. Okay.
[00:36:54] Speaker B: Your email, everything you want. Okay.
[00:36:56] Speaker C: Yeah. Address.
[00:36:57] Speaker A: We'll put username, password, Social Security number.
[00:37:00] Speaker C: Yeah, that's cool. Yeah.
[00:37:02] Speaker B: Okay.
[00:37:02] Speaker A: Feature, Feature, Feature. What about it, guys?
[00:37:05] Speaker C: Okay, okay, okay. You know, so give us some context.
[00:37:08] Speaker A: Yeah.
What kind of context?
[00:37:10] Speaker C: So you're. You're writing.
[00:37:13] Speaker B: Writing?
[00:37:13] Speaker A: Yes.
[00:37:14] Speaker C: Have you finished a draft?
[00:37:15] Speaker A: Yes.
[00:37:15] Speaker C: Are you. Have you finished two drafts?
[00:37:17] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:37:18] Speaker C: Have you finished three drafts?
[00:37:20] Speaker A: King.
[00:37:21] Speaker C: Are you all. You finish a lot of drafts or, like, you're.
[00:37:23] Speaker A: No, I'm. I'm like.
I'm doing that thing where I'm like, I love this story. I.
This is like, again, wow. I'm really circling back to Saturn Return.
[00:37:36] Speaker C: Please do.
[00:37:36] Speaker A: Where I'm like, you know when you, like, write a lot of things?
Because I write all the time. Have been writing and while making all of this stuff and, like, I'm also directing this, like, web series and things like that. Like, I'm doing a lot of things for other people. But then, like, this is your. This is the thing that I just always like. Okay, let me come back to this. And this one is very.
I got the advice in this era of my life of like, okay, you are. You write a lot of things that are not. Yes. Personal, but, like, they're separated from you. Like, just.
Let's do. Write what, you know, vibes. Just go there and let yourself go there and write it. And so it's been like, that's kind of also been helping me on this journey.
Yes. And I'm like, oh, and this is gonna be the best one. Because I'm like, oh, it's gonna be the most thing. And then. Yeah, very. All similar things of like, yeah. Home movie show, like, you know, okay, we're back to inner child. This is also very reflective of that. It's not a true story, but it's just all inspired by the true feelings.
[00:38:58] Speaker B: Is there, like a main artistic comp or inspiration that you would sort of align it with?
[00:39:04] Speaker A: Yes.
I'm kind of. This is insane to say, but like,
[00:39:10] Speaker C: Dune, I was thinking.
[00:39:13] Speaker A: So I'm gonna say it's like Star Wars.
No. Can you imagine?
[00:39:19] Speaker C: I was like, yeah, who knows?
[00:39:20] Speaker A: It's Star wars mixed with Dune mixed with.
[00:39:25] Speaker B: But really personal.
[00:39:26] Speaker A: Really personal. Like on the ground. Coming of age.
Yes, I guess Star wars is coming of age.
[00:39:34] Speaker C: It is
[00:39:37] Speaker B: actually.
[00:39:40] Speaker A: It is.
[00:39:40] Speaker B: It's actually just.
[00:39:41] Speaker A: Can I diverge for one second? Just really fast?
During the pandemic, I was a teacher. We've talked about this in the last One, I was a pod teacher, and then I also taught kids online extracurricular activities, like through Zoom. It's crazy time I say on the thing, they're like, what can you teach through this company? I'm like, great. I can teach film. I'm literally certified in teaching theater, art, fashion, whichever, whatever you want.
They get back to me. They're going, okay, so you're going to teach cooking and Jedi Academy. Jedi Academy. I'm screaming into the mic. I mean, which is.
[00:40:22] Speaker B: Which is more difficult, cooking or Jedi Academy?
[00:40:25] Speaker A: I honestly. Jedi Academy.
[00:40:27] Speaker C: What is your. What does that mean exactly? Is it like.
[00:40:31] Speaker A: Is it like.
No. An elective where it's all about Star Wars. And it's like, all these.
The kids that signed up, they're like,
[00:40:42] Speaker C: they probably know way more than you. They're probably like, yeah.
[00:40:45] Speaker A: Riddle me this.
I get that we start in two days. I've never seen a Star wars film.
[00:40:52] Speaker C: Oh, my God.
[00:40:53] Speaker A: I'm going, oh, my God, what the hell am I going to do? Yeah, I don't have time to watch them. I sort of really do crash coursing YouTube video.
[00:41:05] Speaker C: Because AI wasn't really a thing.
[00:41:07] Speaker A: It was not a thing.
[00:41:07] Speaker C: Yeah, right.
[00:41:08] Speaker A: It was not a thing.
[00:41:09] Speaker B: So what did. What did you do?
[00:41:10] Speaker A: I crash coursed on, like. I'm like, tell me everything about Star wars. Like, on everything. And so I'm going, okay, C3PO.
Okay.
[00:41:19] Speaker C: You guys are literally the same person.
[00:41:22] Speaker B: I don't.
[00:41:23] Speaker A: I'm like, okay.
[00:41:24] Speaker B: Holy.
[00:41:25] Speaker A: I'm go. I'm diving into this world. I'm like, jabba the Hut.
[00:41:31] Speaker C: Yeah.
[00:41:31] Speaker A: Okay, so I'm learning these terms.
[00:41:33] Speaker C: Yeah.
[00:41:34] Speaker A: I'm going, luke, I am your father. Vibes. Okay, okay, okay, got it. But then you're. If I have to start, I have to start with what, 4, 5, 6. Then I go back to 1, 2, 3. I've learned this, right? I still haven't seen the movies, you guys, but I need to.
[00:41:49] Speaker C: Yeah, I've got to.
[00:41:50] Speaker B: Oh, you still.
[00:41:51] Speaker A: I still have not.
[00:41:52] Speaker B: Even though you did, in fact teach a class.
[00:41:53] Speaker A: I taught for, like, months. Jedi Academy.
I go, okay, guys, take.
[00:42:02] Speaker B: You gotta bring Star wars equally here.
[00:42:05] Speaker A: Yes. I. I, in theater school, took like, I knew kind of about stage combat a little bit. So I'm going, okay, I can do that. Sort of. This is really divulging. But I'm loving telling the story, I think. So.
Okay, we're gonna teach on Zoom to your lifesavers. Amazon.
Yeah.
I'm like, okay, we're teaching this. And then I just do. I Sort of go on quizlet. I'm going, okay, let me figure out.
Okay. I can ask questions. Do, like, pop quiz stuff. It's all little boys, and one girl is in the class. This girl is seeing right through me.
And that was kind of the thing where I was like, girl, you gotta chill out. Being like, that's actually not right about this. And I'm like, all the boys are kind of like, get your shit, whatever.
[00:42:57] Speaker B: Can we play the lightsabers down?
[00:42:58] Speaker A: Yeah. I was like, okay, yeah, great, great, great.
But this girl just kept me on my toes the whole time. I was like, ava.
[00:43:05] Speaker C: You're like, I'm definitely not watching the movie now.
[00:43:07] Speaker A: Yeah, no, just sort of. I'm calling her Ava.
[00:43:09] Speaker C: Okay.
[00:43:10] Speaker A: I'm calling her Ava. No, no, no, I'm calling her Ava.
I don't remember her name. But anyway, I love that. I love. Yeah. Kids are so funny.
[00:43:19] Speaker B: So funny.
[00:43:20] Speaker C: So the script has nothing to do with Star Wars.
[00:43:22] Speaker A: It has nothing to do with Star Wars. Wow. Yeah.
[00:43:25] Speaker C: No.
[00:43:25] Speaker A: But it does have to do with a dance troupe.
[00:43:29] Speaker C: Cool.
[00:43:30] Speaker A: And so it's dance, ballet.
[00:43:33] Speaker B: You.
[00:43:34] Speaker C: We spoke about this extensively on the OG EP with you episode.
Just how stylistically, like, you just have a very. Like, you're great with costume and set deck and art and all of that almost in like a Wes Anderson way.
Do you.
Are you seeing this movie like that or because of the. Write what you know, and, like, look inward. Are you like, this is real, right?
[00:44:05] Speaker A: No, I've combined that. Like, it is stuck to that instinct for yourself. But it. The.
I just. I was just talking with someone and we were talking about this thing that. I really loved what he said about, like, systems.
Systems, like, coming up in a.
In a script, like, or in a story, like, how you. You sort of, like, pick up on things that just are arriving in the script itself. Like dance being a system or movement being a system. Like.
[00:44:38] Speaker C: Like a theme.
[00:44:39] Speaker A: Yeah, like a theme. But it's like, what is the.
What keeps coming up just in the language of the film. And you're like, oh, this keeps coming up. So what is that? It just naturally is coming up. And then.
I think that's what it means. Yeah, but that has been really helpful. Like, just movement has been really coming up in this.
[00:45:05] Speaker B: Leaning in. Right?
[00:45:06] Speaker A: Yeah. And then I talked to you a little bit about. I'm like, oh, I'm, like, getting studio and, like, really, like, kind of through it.
And then I talked to you guys last time of, like, whenever I'm in the car, I'm writing it which is right through the music.
[00:45:19] Speaker B: Is it as simple as, like, Script is about dance and movement. So part of your filmmaking process will have to do with dance and movement?
[00:45:27] Speaker A: Kind of. Yeah. Like, it's. It's definitely. It's felt like I'm like, oh, the way I'm writing this is like I have to move through it. And you're like, okay. The whole thing is.
[00:45:36] Speaker B: I love that.
[00:45:37] Speaker A: That.
[00:45:38] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:45:38] Speaker A: You're like, oh, interesting.
[00:45:39] Speaker B: Is that. Is dance something part of your past, like, is movement?
[00:45:43] Speaker A: I just.
[00:45:44] Speaker B: I mean, theater, obviously. Like, there's so much connection between body and emotion.
[00:45:48] Speaker A: Yeah. It was mostly theater, but when I was very little, I did dance, and so it's just kind of going. I went back there and I used to do, like. I did the Nutcracker every year. Like, I was a part of a ballet studio, and we did the Nutcracker until I was, like, 11 and didn't go on point. Like, point.
[00:46:09] Speaker B: Right.
[00:46:09] Speaker C: Yeah.
[00:46:10] Speaker A: Because I was like, am I really gonna do this?
[00:46:13] Speaker B: Totally. It's. Yeah. But that's another kind of version of Saturn Returns, right?
[00:46:16] Speaker A: Like, yes. Like, am I gonna go on pointe or is this not my life?
[00:46:21] Speaker C: Yeah.
[00:46:21] Speaker A: I'm not that great at ballet. So let me just.
[00:46:24] Speaker C: Are you watching films that are, like, inspiring tonally?
[00:46:29] Speaker A: Totally. Yeah.
[00:46:30] Speaker B: And music.
[00:46:31] Speaker A: Yeah. You know, we talk about that last time. It's mostly music.
[00:46:34] Speaker C: Yeah, yeah.
[00:46:34] Speaker B: Remember, she has her playlist.
[00:46:35] Speaker C: She was just saying the car. Yeah, yeah.
[00:46:37] Speaker A: Right. Yes. Yes. So that's. That's been that.
[00:46:40] Speaker C: But are you. I guess I'm just trying to get a sense of, like, the. Like. Are you watching, like, old Greta stuff? Like, you know, Frances Ha. When she's a dancer and all that.
[00:46:50] Speaker A: Oh, yeah. Like, there's that. It's Dance Nation, literally, like, moonlight and.
What else?
Short term 12 is another one. The Tale is another one.
[00:47:06] Speaker B: So exposing yourself intentionally to works that are in conversation with your work.
[00:47:11] Speaker A: Yeah. And just, like, different elements of things. A lot of. I've been watching a lot of old ballets also with this just kind of like. And there's older movies that are like, the Red Shoes and stuff.
[00:47:22] Speaker C: Yeah.
[00:47:23] Speaker A: And obviously Black Swan. I'm kind of like, what is this again?
[00:47:27] Speaker C: Black Swan is.
[00:47:27] Speaker B: That's the big one.
[00:47:28] Speaker A: Yeah. I'm like, oh, what is this again? I, like, have not seen it in so long. And then I was like, oh, this is an amazing movie.
[00:47:34] Speaker C: Black Swan is.
[00:47:36] Speaker A: It's not like Black Swan, but.
[00:47:38] Speaker C: But that's. That movie is so incredible.
[00:47:40] Speaker B: I don't know that.
[00:47:43] Speaker C: And the Red Shoes Obviously, yeah, awesome. Kind of found that way after Black
[00:47:47] Speaker A: Swan, but, yeah, awesome. But, yeah, but then also, like, yeah, I mean, I'm just watching things that inspire me more. Dialogue stuff that I'm like, oh, we're. You know, I'm watching, like, you like, Fish Tank also. I love that. Like, just a very conversational, you know, just kind of picking things up.
[00:48:07] Speaker C: I. I was listening to Paul Thomas Anderson talk about screenwriting. There's this old interview he did. It's like a Writer's Guild foundation chat.
I think it's for the Master.
[00:48:18] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:48:18] Speaker C: But great. This great movie. But this interviewer is like, oh, my God, he's incredible.
[00:48:23] Speaker B: Who was the interviewer?
[00:48:24] Speaker C: I don't know his name.
I think he's a critic, probably.
But really, like, such an incredible conversation. And PTA is usually kind of edgy and shut off, at least back in the day. And, like, in conversation, he's just more of like, yeah, no, huh.
But this time he was, like, leaning in and, like, so into the conversation because this dude was, like, just asking these incredible questions. But PTA is very research driven when it comes to writing, and he's all about, like.
He's very open to it. Of, like, in the Master, you found these old letters from, like, old sailors and stuff, and folks in the military, the Navy, whatever it was, and, like, fully just ripped, like, used these words for the certain characters, whatever. But, like, his thought process was you get almost like a. Just a bucket of research, and you kind of just dump it on the table and you start just picking it up and piecing stuff together. Do you feel like that's kind of your process where you're just in this, like, sponge phase where you're just, like, collecting? Because a lot of the flip side would be open, final draft, and you're just, like, finding it on the page
[00:49:30] Speaker B: and then you do your research after
[00:49:32] Speaker C: kind of like, yeah, yeah, yeah.
[00:49:34] Speaker A: I'm not. I'm not traditional like that.
[00:49:37] Speaker C: That's not. That's also kind of. I guess traditional would be like, outlining and then.
[00:49:42] Speaker A: Yeah, yeah. Like, it's a conglomerate.
[00:49:44] Speaker C: Yeah.
[00:49:44] Speaker A: I just, like. I talked to you guys last time about just, like, schooling and, like, growing up in a very. I went to a really, like, a prep school that was very kind of rigid. Yes. And then college, I kind of, like, found more of, oh, it can be whatever you want it to be. And then when I was making these short films, I kind of found my process more and more of like, oh, yeah, it can be whatever you want it to be.
[00:50:11] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:50:11] Speaker A: And so that's been way more collagey since I've found.
And again, letting yourself do it, like, letting yourself go there and not. It's so hard to not judge yourself if you're not. I don't know. I hate saying traditional thinker because I'm like, what does that mean?
[00:50:31] Speaker C: Yeah.
[00:50:32] Speaker A: But, yeah, like, just letting yourself be inspired and kind of like, move your way through it. Move your way through it however you see fit. I'm gonna take a sip also.
[00:50:44] Speaker B: I love that.
[00:50:45] Speaker A: Yeah. So it's kind of been a collage
[00:50:47] Speaker B: process, like pta, but I think that is.
[00:50:51] Speaker A: Anderson.
[00:50:51] Speaker C: Hey.
[00:50:51] Speaker B: That is your. From what I remember, that is your process, like, doing the music and do it, like, very visual, laid out, like. Yeah, it's so cool.
[00:51:00] Speaker A: Yeah.
I love it.
[00:51:02] Speaker C: Well, do you set timelines? Are you like, I need to have this next draft done. Are you wrapped? Are you.
[00:51:09] Speaker A: No.
[00:51:10] Speaker C: So you're. You're your boss. Like, you're.
[00:51:13] Speaker A: Yeah, I was wrapped and I've been like, solo for a while, just trying again. This kind of time in life of going, what am I really looking for? What's the. The goal? And yes, I. I do have, like, benchmarkers and things like that. Is that the right.
[00:51:30] Speaker C: How do you hold yourself accountable for that? For. For those.
[00:51:33] Speaker A: Google. Cal.
[00:51:34] Speaker C: Yeah. You just see it coming.
[00:51:36] Speaker A: I'm like, google Calendar is my number one.
[00:51:41] Speaker C: Yeah.
[00:51:41] Speaker A: Friend. I love that system.
[00:51:45] Speaker C: Yeah.
[00:51:46] Speaker A: Love it. I just. I'm like, okay.
[00:51:48] Speaker C: And you, like, get five pages done or is it like three months from now? Draft is due.
[00:51:53] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:51:53] Speaker C: Right.
[00:51:53] Speaker A: It's like, I'll do week by week and then month goals. And if I'm around that, I'm. If I. If I'm a little later, a little ahead, I'm not.
[00:52:05] Speaker C: Yeah.
[00:52:06] Speaker A: You know, sure. But I do, like, hold myself accountable with that stuff.
[00:52:09] Speaker C: Yeah. It's great. Yeah.
[00:52:11] Speaker B: What is your. What is your, like, view on collaboration and like, showing drafts to people? Like, do you have your go to people who you show stuff to?
[00:52:22] Speaker C: I. I feel like you're someone that does not show people stuff until it's done.
[00:52:29] Speaker B: Done, done.
[00:52:30] Speaker A: You're. You're pretty, right? Yeah, I. It's like, not entirely done, but, like. Yeah, I'm pretty precious for a while.
[00:52:38] Speaker B: You're very insular.
[00:52:39] Speaker C: Yeah.
[00:52:39] Speaker A: Yeah. And. But then that's why I think I. I'll get lonely with this stuff where I'm like, okay, this is all very here. And then I'm like, where are the people in life? But no, I love, like, what I love to do is I love working with other people on their stuff with them.
When it's like a very personal project like this, I'm like, okay, I'm gonna have to figure this out and then give it to someone to look at. Like, when I feel pretty solid in what this is. And so I'm not like, someone can't fully come in and be like, this whole story is wrong or something. And you're like, I've done this work. I know this is, like, what the story is.
[00:53:25] Speaker C: No, it's right.
[00:53:26] Speaker A: I'm like, this is. It's right.
And I want to feel good about it being right. But then I. Give me notes.
Please give me notes. If this is really not working. Great.
Okay. Thank God.
[00:53:39] Speaker C: Such a great trait.
[00:53:41] Speaker A: Yeah. Oh, please give me notes. Oh, no, I'm not. Like, I'm. I know all. I hate that you're like, no, you
[00:53:50] Speaker C: also kind of need that, too. You need a little. You need a little.
[00:53:53] Speaker B: Yeah, yeah. It's a balance.
[00:53:55] Speaker A: I don't know.
[00:53:56] Speaker B: I always. When I. When I give notes to friends, I always try to preface it with, like, take what you want out of this. Like, you know your script the best.
[00:54:05] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:54:06] Speaker B: So take what you want out of these notes. This is just my perspective on the script. Like, I try to make them believe that they are. They're the writer. They're the captain of the ship. Like, that's. Yeah, yeah, that's really important.
[00:54:17] Speaker A: I. Bill Hader said something, I think once that was, like, the notes, they're. When people give you notes, like, they're usually right about, like, what is not really not hitting for them or, like, if you trust their artistic, you know, opinion.
But, like, the. Usually they'll, like, say something of how you can fix it. And, like, that's where you kind of have to be, like, a little more. Okay. But they're usually. If something's not ringing true to them, it's like, oh, really? Listen to that. And you're like, okay, cool.
[00:54:50] Speaker B: Yeah, totally. Yeah.
[00:54:53] Speaker C: Yeah.
[00:54:53] Speaker B: Oh, my God, guys, I could talk about, like, the notes giving and taking process forever.
[00:54:58] Speaker A: I love notes.

[00:58:08] Speaker A: What, in. In Los Angeles?
[00:58:10] Speaker B: Yeah. I mean, the weather's freaking me out.
The weather falling into the ocean, fires are happening the day after, it's gonna flood like crazy.
[00:58:20] Speaker A: I mean, I know it's so crazy. But you know what I love?
[00:58:24] Speaker B: What? No, I'm gonna keep talking.
[00:58:26] Speaker A: Keep going, Keep going.
[00:58:27] Speaker B: What. What we were warned about five years ago with the climate. Oh, yeah, it's happening right now.
[00:58:32] Speaker C: Yeah.
[00:58:32] Speaker A: Oh, it's horrifying.
[00:58:33] Speaker B: It is like, this is not. It's no longer a future thing. It's happening right now.
[00:58:37] Speaker A: Yes. Yeah, yeah.
[00:58:38] Speaker B: Everything's awful.
[00:58:39] Speaker A: And we're writing our scripts. Yeah, yeah, yeah. By the way. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
[00:58:46] Speaker B: I was watching it. It's crazy videos.
[00:58:49] Speaker C: You gotta make art in times.
[00:58:50] Speaker B: Like, Andrew Garfield was on the Daily show, interviewed, I think, a couple days ago.
[00:58:56] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:58:57] Speaker B: And he was talking like, they asked that question, what do you do for fun?
[00:59:00] Speaker A: Oh, yeah.
[00:59:00] Speaker B: And he was like, I go to art shows and I go to live theater. He was like, I think it's one of the only things that makes us realize that we're human. And it's like, only. One of the only good things that humans do now we, like, totally is. Is film. Yeah. Expose it. Like, that's actually people doing good.
[00:59:21] Speaker C: Yeah.
[00:59:21] Speaker B: And there's not that much of that in the world right now.
[00:59:26] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:59:27] Speaker B: So.
[00:59:27] Speaker C: Yeesh.
[00:59:28] Speaker A: Well, I love being from Los Angeles.
[00:59:30] Speaker C: Yeah.
[00:59:30] Speaker B: No, I mean, me too.
[00:59:32] Speaker C: But.
[00:59:33] Speaker B: So what do you do for fun?
[00:59:36] Speaker A: Honestly? Okay, again, it's all related to work, which is so stupid.
But, like, I have, again, in this time period, have really been, like, I'm. I love la. I love Los Angeles. I've been exploring it more. And just being from here. Yes. Born in Vancouver. Moved down here, too.
Been here my whole life, other than going to college and back.
But I love it here. And I'm like, I just went to the Malibu Chili. Cook off. Like, I went to Chili now. It just ended I would love some chili. It was so fun. I was like, I went to the fair, you know, I'm going to the fair. I've been to like the beach a little more. Did not do that before. And I'm like going to Griffith and just kind of like going around. I feel that, I think, I feel old movie theaters.
[01:00:31] Speaker B: Decent amount of that this summer. I think from when you're from la, you actually have sometimes seen like the least amount of.
[01:00:38] Speaker C: Absolutely.
[01:00:39] Speaker B: Like where we grew up. Like I was not, I was not going to Silver Lake growing up.
[01:00:43] Speaker C: No, different universe.
[01:00:44] Speaker B: Exactly. Like Beverly Hills. That was like not as I would go like question. Yeah, totally.
[01:00:50] Speaker A: Yes. So I've been doing that. I've really been like going to. Yeah. Like the old movie theaters.
[01:00:55] Speaker B: Have you been to the zoo recently?
[01:00:57] Speaker A: No.
[01:00:57] Speaker C: We should go.
[01:00:58] Speaker A: That's gonna be a 5050 podcast zoo.
I'm down.
[01:01:03] Speaker B: I mean with these guys live recording it.
[01:01:05] Speaker C: It's actually hilarious in.
[01:01:06] Speaker B: In like the giraffe exhibit or something.
[01:01:08] Speaker C: Oh my God.
[01:01:09] Speaker A: To go up to one of the monkeys and.
[01:01:13] Speaker B: Oh yeah.
[01:01:13] Speaker A: Interview them, chat. Because they're kind of.
[01:01:16] Speaker C: They're like. Yeah. So I've been out here for. Yeah, you know, 16 years.
[01:01:20] Speaker B: You know, I did the mailroom thing and I. It didn't fully work out and now
[01:01:24] Speaker A: I just feel like in this industry I'm a monkey in a cage.
[01:01:27] Speaker C: You know, I'm actually. It's like an actor.
[01:01:29] Speaker B: But listen, I got a built in audience here so, you know, 24 7. I bet they have good stories, you know, betting provided. So I got my. It's good.
[01:01:42] Speaker C: I was meant to go to London.
[01:01:44] Speaker B: I was, you know, I was out there. You know they're thinking of changing the zoo to London because the tax credit.
[01:01:48] Speaker C: Yeah. This new monkey comes in the other day.

[01:01:53] Speaker C: He's got the good air.
[01:01:54] Speaker B: Exactly.
[01:01:55] Speaker C: Hey.
[01:01:55] Speaker A: Hey, you two. Yeah, you should do two. Prof. Whoa.
[01:01:59] Speaker C: What do you think?
[01:01:59] Speaker B: I feel like we do that. Let's do it two pro.
[01:02:02] Speaker A: Two pro. Do it.
[01:02:05] Speaker C: We should do three prov. Thank you. Wy.
[01:02:08] Speaker B: Thank you.

[01:02:10] Speaker A: Yeah, my dream.
[01:02:11] Speaker B: Do you remember? Yeah. Do you remember that? The final question. What's the dream?
[01:02:14] Speaker A: I. I liked. I, I liked it. I actually didn't. I was like, I like this. But then yeah. I'm like, my real one is like, I.

[01:02:38] Speaker C: It's real, man.
[01:02:39] Speaker A: And it's. It gets bleak in the industry, especially these last couple years.
[01:02:44] Speaker B: Yeah.
[01:02:44] Speaker A: I'm like, the dream, honestly, has kind of been accumulated in that show, genuinely, of the whole movie thing. It really is like, I feel I. It feels really good to do it, and it feels very. I just want to, like. Yeah, make. Make art. That kind of. Or make an experience that people can enjoy. I think that is the dream.
[01:03:09] Speaker B: Amazing.
